Crush poverty, beat the financial black hole money-pile

fund-a-farm

Despite the billions of dollars poured into feeding the hungry, the problem of poverty relentlessly expands. Every year the poor are getting poorer and the numbers are out of control.

Nearly one in nine people worldwide are chronically undernourished, and 2.7 million children die of malnutrition each year ¹.

Of the 815 million people suffering from chronic hunger, 98 percent live in the developing world ². Unlike famines that receive emergency-aid, chronic hunger is a silent, invisible, day-after-day condition. Hunger, poverty and food prices are inextricably linked.

Our first inclination can be to simply throw money at the problem and buy more food.

Projects aimed at assisting poverty stricken areas have a tendency to become monetary black holes. This is something that neither benefits the poor long term nor encourages donors in the West.

The need for projects that could multiply themselves is readily apparent. As a result “Seed Their Need’ was developed. Our goal is to be a tool of equipping to empower the poor to help themselves …a hand –up not a hand-out approach. Since its inception, Seed Their Need has already established 1500 farms. As of the end of 2018, another 5000 farmers have been awarded interest free grants for farms in 2019.

For sustainability… and hope

For this project to totally relieve poverty in Africa, overseas donations will not be enough. Funds need to be raised from within the countryTo achieve this we will be seeking out potential farmers who not only want to help themselves, but have empathy for the plight of those living in poverty. They will have a heart to help them … just as they were helped. They will become our national partners.

As a provision of receiving their own interest free grant, each new farmer will agree to donate 20% of their harvest towards funding another farm. This will build a sense of self-worth and fulfillment in them, knowing they have done their part in changing the destiny of their country.

$50 Funds a Farm*

50-dollars-farm

Seed Their Need has been built on the realization that it only requires $50 to fund a farm …. and that farm to be able to reproduce itself.

As our success grows, so does our waiting list.

Admin Costs: Less than 10%

Expenditure-Graphic

Many charities across the globe use a large percentage of donor funds to cover administrative costs. These can be as high as 25% or more. However, that’s only the admin costs of the fund raiser, let alone the admin costs of the recipient. However, Seed Their Need takes less than 10%.

How is this achieved?

volunteers-carrying-seed

Seed Their Need, uses the policy of volunteers. In both Australia and Zambia resulting in around 9.5% in overall costs of administration and audtiting.

In Australia, Seed Their Need  administrative costs are covered by the generosity of staff members. Many after-hours work is put in by our office administrator, Suzanne Scott and our fund raisers.

In Zambia, the small administrative costs by our organization are less than 2%. They are raised locally by way of a small membership fee to join Seed Their Need and in the other cases fees from our school, Community Care Academy (another one of our projects).

Where do these volunteers come from?

volunteers-seed-their-need-truckVolunteers are produced from our Academy where they are taught that working with our organization is never a job, but a calling.  Each of farm manager has a team of 15 supervisors. They are not paid anything and each team looks after 20 farms on a part time basis.

Their only benefit is a bicycle they receive from Seed Their Need which enables them to travel to the farms. It’s a huge boost to them and they gladly sacrifice because of that.

We partner with the Australian approved NGO, Global Development Group who receive our donations, distribute receipts and provide on-site audits in Zambia.

Therefore, total administrative costs, for both the fund raiser and the recipient are less than 10%.

In addition, unlike many charities,  we have no advertising budget. When people understand how the farms reproduce themselves and the low admin costs, word of mouth becomes our greatest advertising tool.

As our success grows, so does our waiting list.
